Why Palmetto
The lawn for shade from trees and patios.
Palmetto is a semi dwarf variety of St. Augustine grass with broad, soft blades. It tolerates much more shade than Bermuda, so it keeps growing under mature trees, beside tall walls and at the edge of a covered patio where Bermuda fades.
It still needs some direct sun each day, and deep shade all day will thin any grass. St. Augustine also uses more water than Bermuda and does not bounce back from heavy wear as fast, so we match it to the right part of the yard.

Palmetto St. Augustine belongs in the parts of a Chandler yard that lose sun for part of the day. These are the spots where we install it most.
Many East Valley yards mix sun and shade, and it is common to run Bermuda in the open areas and Palmetto in the shaded ones. Each zone can then be watered for the grass that grows there.
01
Lawns around shade trees
Front yard grass that stays full as a young tree grows and casts more shade.
Before we price Palmetto, we look at how many hours of direct sun each area gets and how the shade moves across the yard through the day. Winter and summer sun angles differ, so we ask what the yard looks like in each season.
Areas in full shade all day may be better as a planting bed or rock. We would rather tell you that on the visit than lay grass that struggles.
St. Augustine spreads by above ground runners called stolons and is not grown from seed, so sod is the practical way to get a full Palmetto lawn. That makes the prep under the sod even more important.
Our Chandler crew uses the same five steps on every Palmetto lawn, from a small shaded courtyard in Tempe to a tree lined backyard in Gilbert. The watering plan you get at the end is built for St. Augustine, which wants more water than Bermuda.

Pairs well
Grass, trees and water work together.
Shade usually comes from trees, and an overgrown canopy can block more light than any lawn can handle. Thinning the canopy lets more sun reach the Palmetto below.
St. Augustine needs more water than Bermuda, so sprinkler coverage in shaded zones has to be right. We fix and adjust heads so the new lawn is not left with dry strips.
Palmetto sod pricing depends on your yard and the prep it needs. These four factors matter most to the final number.
Shaded yards often come with tree roots to work around and old grass that has thinned to dirt. Your quote spells out each item before anything is scheduled.

Questions
Palmetto St. Augustine, answered.
Chandler homeowners with shaded yards ask us these most often when they are deciding on Palmetto.
If your question is not covered here, bring it to the free on-site estimate. We will look at your actual light and soil before we answer.
/01 How much sun does Palmetto St. Augustine need?
It needs some direct sun each day and does best with a few hours of it plus filtered light. In deep, all day shade, even Palmetto will thin out.
/02 Can Palmetto St. Augustine be grown from seed?
No. It is not sold as seed, so it goes in as sod or plugs. Sod gives you a full lawn right away.
/03 Does Palmetto need more water than Bermuda?
Yes, St. Augustine generally uses more water than Bermuda grass. Good sprinkler coverage and deep, less frequent watering once it is rooted help keep that in check.
/04 Is Palmetto good for dogs and heavy play?
It handles light to moderate foot traffic, but it does not recover from heavy wear as quickly as Bermuda. For a busy dog run in the sun, Midiron or Tifway 419 is usually the better pick.
/05 How tall should I mow Palmetto?
Keep it taller than a Bermuda lawn. Cutting St. Augustine too short stresses it and opens the door to weeds.
/06 Can I have Palmetto and Bermuda in the same yard?
Yes. Plenty of East Valley yards use Bermuda in the sunny areas and Palmetto in the shade. Keeping them on separate irrigation zones makes watering each one easier.
Where we work
Palmetto lawns across Chandler and the East Valley.
We install Palmetto St. Augustine in Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Tempe, Ahwatukee, Queen Creek and San Tan Valley.
Older neighborhoods with mature trees in Mesa, Tempe and central Chandler are where shade problems show up most. Newer yards often get there too once patio covers and shade trees fill in.
Palmetto is the only St. Augustine among the four sod varieties we install most, and it fills a different role than the three Bermudas.
Tifway 419, Midiron and TifTuf all need full sun and handle rough play better. Palmetto gives up some of that toughness and uses more water in exchange for growing where the Bermudas cannot.
